Mott MacDonald is providing technical advice for Tarfaya wind project

Construction has started on a 300MW wind farm in Morocco which will be one of the largest in Africa. Mott MacDonald is providing technical advice to lenders during construction and operational phases. During the development phase of the project, the consultancy provided contract, technical, environmental and social due diligence services. The project developer is a consortium of Nareva Holding and GDF SUEZ.

Morocco aims to obtain 42% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. The MAD5 billion (€450 million) wind farm in Tarfaya will almost double the country’s wind capacity. It will consist of 131 Siemens SW-2.3-101 turbines.

Mott MacDonald’s project director Clare Rhodes-James said: “Electricity demand growth in Morocco has averaged 6% per year since 1998 and will continue to grow in the next 20 years. Wind energy provides carbon free electricity and by building the Tarfaya wind farm 900,000 tons of CO2 emissions a year will be avoided. The project will also provide employment to local people and contribute to building the nation’s economy.”

The Tarfaya wind farm is due to be completed by the end of 2014 and will be operational for 20 years.
