Helping Kids Build Work Ethic and Learn About Money Issues Drives Partnership

In its 2013 National Report Card on State Efforts to Improve Financial Literacy in High Schools, the Center for Financial Literacy at Champlain College awarded 30 states (roughly 60% of the U.S.) a grade of C or worse.

The state of Kansas received a B on the report card because it mandates personal finance education as part of another course offering, but requires no assessment. In some cases, there may be a math course that includes a partial assessment of personal finance knowledge. Kansas requires financial literacy topics to be included in the model content standards for mathematics and requires certain personal finance topics be tested as part of math assessment tests given to all students.

Recognizing that students in Kansas are still not receiving a well-rounded base on financial education, the Kansas PTA has decided to partner with MyJobChart.com to provide parents an important educational tool to help teach kids about work ethic, responsibility, accountability and managing money. The Kansas PTA services 20,000 members from 150 chapters statewide.

MyJobChart.com, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, is a free, easy to use, online and mobile job chart and reward system designed to teach, organize and motivate kids to earn, save, share and spend responsibly. In a little more than three years, MyJobChart.com has accumulated more than 742,000 members, who have completed more than 22 million jobs, earned roughly $3 million and donated to numerous charities including Autism Speaks, National MPS Society, Noah’s Bandage Project and Cookies For Kids’ Cancer.

Since the report was announced last July, several states have begun the process of improving their status by passing legislative measures. Still, only four states (Utah, Missouri, Tennessee and Virginia) require a one-semester course devoted to personal finance.
