TORONTO, January 17, 2014 – Across the country more than 300 high school track and field athletes are preparing to lace up their spikes and hit the track at the 2014 Nike High School Grand Prix track and field invitational. Today, School Sport Canada named 24 teams from 12 provinces and territories to attend the Nike High School Grand Prix weekend in Toronto May 8-11, 2014.

The Nike High School Grand Prix unites high school student athletes, coaches, teachers, families and friends to celebrate the sport of track and field.  One male and one female high school level team from 12 provinces and territories have been selected based on merits of sportsmanship, excellence in sport, dedication to academics and school spirit.  Participants will attend social events throughout the weekend including an athletic banquet, Toronto cultural experiences and several surprises from Nike, including a meet and greet with Nike athletes. The Canadian track and field competition will be held on Friday, May 9 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto where all 24 teams will race for gold.

“We were so impressed with the application submissions from high schools across the country. Teams demonstrated their passion for high school sport and determination to come together as teammates,” said Karen Richard, President, School Sport Canada. “The Nike High School Grand Prix is truly a unique opportunity for Canadian track and field student athletes. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to bond with and compete against student athletes from across the country.”

This is the third year that the Nike High School Grand Prix track and field invitational will be held at University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium.  On Friday, May 9 more than 300 Canadian high school athletes will compete in a 10-event track and field competition. The track and field events include: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m run, 110m hurdles (boys), 100m hurdles (girls), long jump, high jump, shot-put, and the 4 x 100m cross-provincial relay. Athletes will be drafted to 4 x 100m cross-provincial relay teams leading up to the event. Teams are assembled with a mix of athletes from various provinces.

“At Nike our mission is to bring inspiration to all athletes; and fostering the development of young athletes is one of our top priorities,” said Claire Rankine, Communications Director, Nike Canada.  “Sponsoring The Nike High School Grand Prix is a great way to support Canada’s top up-and-coming track and field athletes, put their skills to the test and help them realize their full potential.”
