Designed for Full-Body Magnetic Resonance Imaging Safety

North American Partners in Pain Management (NAPPM), a subsidiary of North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA), today announced that John Stamatos, M.D., Director of Pain Management for NAPPM, was selected as the first physician on Long Island to provide the first and only implantable neurostimulation systems (also known as spinal cord stimulation, or SCS) used in the treatment of chronic pain designed for full-body Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) safety. Dr. Stamatos is among an exclusive group of chronic pain doctors in the nation to be given access to the RestoreSensor® SureScan® MRI with Vectris® SureScan® MRI percutaneous leads. Dr. Stamatos will be implanting his first SureScan MRI neurostimulator on August 6, 2013 at North Shore-LIJ’s Syosset Hospital. NAPPM’s involvement with this technological advancement demonstrates their continued role in cutting edge pain management techniques.

Used to interrupt pain signals from reaching the brain, Medtronic neurostimulation therapy for chronic pain uses a medical device placed under a patient’s skin to deliver mild electrical impulses to the spinal cord. Medtronic’s neurostimulation systems with SureScan MRI technology and Vectris SureScan MRI percutaneous leads are specially designed to reduce or eliminate the hazards produced by the MRI environment. The devices also include a proprietary SureScan feature, which sets the device into an appropriate mode for the MRI environment.

“For the estimated 100 million American adults plagued with chronic pain, their lives are challenged and limited since pain dictates much of what they can and cannot do,” said Dr. Stamatos. “Until now, removal of spinal cord stimulation devices to ensure a safe body MRI scan was unavoidable. Through this new technology, patients receiving SCS therapy to manage their chronic pain can now have access to the full benefits of MRI scans without compromising their healthcare – providing their physicians with an opportunity to identify critical medical conditions.   With SureScan technology, our practice is able to offer our patients a new option to help manage their pain symptoms, while further improving their quality of life through the ability to monitor their health and well-being on a whole new level.”

John Stamatos, M.D., obtained his doctor of medicine at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. He went on to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he completed his anesthesiology residency and training in pain management as well as surgical training for the placement implantable devices for the control of pain. In addition to Dr. Stamatos’ role with NAPPM, he serves as attending at North Shore-LIJ Health System in Long Island, NY.
