North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA), the largest single-specialty anesthesia and perioperative management company in the United States, recently had its remote video auditing innovation, NAPA Peak Performance2®, acknowledged as a landmark study in an article featured in the January issue of BMJ Quality & Safety. The article entitled, “Video transparency: a powerful tool for patient safety and quality improvement”, authored by Sarah Joo of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Tim Xu of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Dr. Martin A. Makary, Professor of Surgery and Health Policy & Management of Johns Hopkins University, discusses how video recorded data has transformed the course of medicine. NAPA Peak Performance2 supports video transparency demonstrating the use of technology being used in legally protected fashion for quality improvement to improve compliance with best practices.

“With the use of RVA in healthcare, we have found a viable solution for the challenges hospitals face regarding healthcare reform mandates, while providing critical support for increasing patient safety and operational efficiencies,” said John Di Capua, MD, CEO of NAPA. “We are thrilled to see the positive impact it has had in our industry and how it continually transforms how we deliver care.”

NAPA’s exclusive innovation applies a remote video monitoring solution to encourage adherence to proper perioperative processes and patient safety. Real-time monitoring and feedback and an innovative smartphone app tied to OR start times results in streamlined communications. Through near perfect rates of compliance, NAPA Peak Performance2has positively impacted processes related to infection control, OR turnover time and throughput, and satisfaction among patients and surgeons.

In March 2013, NAPA joined forces with Arrowsight, a provider of remote video auditing (RVA) software, to initiate a new pilot program for their partners, North Shore-LIJ’s North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, N.Y. and Forest Hills Hospital in Queens, N.Y. The program was the first time in the U.S. that RVA was used in a surgical setting.

In a 2011 study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) demonstrated that the use of NAPA Peak Performance2 rapidly improved and sustained hand hygiene rates to nearly 90 percent in less than four weeks. In 2013, there was a prominent recognition of this ground breaking study in a JAMA editorial entitled The Power of Video Recording Taking Quality to the Next Level. In June 2015, Forest Hills Hospital published a study in The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing on emergency room staff training, entitled “Use of Remote Video Auditing to Validate Ebola Level II Personal Protective Equipment Competency”.
