North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA), the leading single- specialty anesthesia management company in the U.S., announces the retirement of three anesthesiologist partners, Michael B. Meyers, M.D., Alan Rachleff, M.D. and Director Emeritus, Peter F.R. Walker, M.D., effective July 2013, bringing to a close three remarkable professional careers. Each physician has been a clinical leader in the anesthesiology industry for many years. Their contributions to NAPA have been substantial and are gratefully acknowledged by the entire NAPA organization.

“Drs. Meyers, Rachleff and Walker have been an instrumental part of the evolution of our organization and have played an invaluable role in the growth of perioperative services,” said John F. Di Capua, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of NAPA. “They have utilized their leadership qualities, clinical skills and knowledge to impact the field of health care, while dedicating their careers to improving the quality of patient-centric anesthesia care. Their consistent and resolute focus on innovation, quality and transparency has created a philosophy, practice and culture within NAPA that has led our organization to become one of the most prestigious anesthesia management companies today.”

Dr. Michael B. Meyers trained at Yale-New Haven Medical Center, serving as Assistant Professor prior to joining North Shore University Hospital in 1977, where he served as Chief of Cardio/Thoracic Anesthesia until 1996. Dr. Meyers is credited by his partners for transforming anesthesia care with the early introduction of invasive monitoring techniques, including routine use of pulmonary artery catheters in both cardiac and complex non-cardiac surgical procedures. Dr. Meyers has been unequivocally considered a brilliant and intuitive clinician. He has served NAPA in the roles of physician recruiting as well as architect of NAPA's risk management program.

Dr. Alan ("Jib") Rachleff is a Yale University School of Medicine graduate who completed his residency training at Columbia-Presbyterian prior to beginning to practice at North Shore University Hospital in 1973, where he became one of the early, sought-after experts in regional anesthesia. Dr. Rachleff has held positions as staff anesthesiologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis, MN and Clinical Instructor at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, NY. In addition, Dr. Rachleff served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.

Dr. Peter Walker, a Harvard trained Cardiac Anesthesiologist specializing in the care of children undergoing heart surgery served as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at North Shore University Hospital from 1982 through 2005. Dr. Walker is credited with establishing the anesthesia practice, North Shore Anesthesia Associates, which served as the forerunner of today’s North American Partners in Anesthesia. Over the years, Dr. Walker held positions as North Shore University Hospital's Medical Director and Vice President of Anesthesia Services for the North Shore-LIJ Health System. In 2011, he was honored by the Hofstra NS-LIJ School of Medicine with the establishment of the Peter Walker, M.D., Professorship of Anesthesiology. Throughout his career, Dr. Walker emphasized a commitment to the gathering of data on patient care and outcomes which led him to champion quality initiatives within NAPA and the Specialty of Anesthesiology.

Drs. Meyers, Rachleff and Walker will continue to work with NAPA in an educational capacity, utilizing their training and expertise to mold the minds of future anesthesiologists through NAPA’s residency programs and other scholarly activities.
