BALTIMORE, MD (September 23, 2016) – A one-room schoolhouse, dating back to 1879, has just hit the market in Sparks for $635,000. The schoolhouse has been transformed into a one-bedroom, one-bathroom luxury residence by the owner and architect, Steven Shipp. Located at 7 Stoddard Court, the property has been listed by Liz Bement of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Towson office.

Built in 1879 on farmland, the Trujay School was built and sold by a local farmer to Baltimore County for $150, and operated for decades until its consolidation to Sparks Elementary School in 1909. The Trujay schoolhouse then became a school for African American children until the mid-1950s, when it was closed and sold at auction. The schoolhouse was purchased and converted into a private residence, while the surrounding land was subdivided to become what is now known as Stoddard.

“The history behind the property gives it so much character, while the tasteful renovation makes the home feel comfortable and warm,” said Bement.

Steven and his wife Pamela purchased the property in 1990. The Shipps renovated the home, drawing inspiration from the Tuscan villages of Italy. The home rests on four and a half acres with a heated pool, pool house and wet bar. Inside, vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and exposed brick highlight the home’s 1,600 square feet of space. The master bedroom is situated on a spacious loft overlooking the home.

Luxury features include:

• Gas fireplace with marble tile

• Chef’s kitchen with custom German SieMatic cabinetry, Miele and Wolf appliances

• Marble master bathroom with heated floors, open shower and built-in gas fireplace

• Custom wine room

The property deed allows for future owners to build an addition onto the existing home or construct a separate residence on the lot.
