D+T with ICT Education Show 2010, 18-20 November, NEC Birmingham

The Government has heralded a new approach to education, returning the National Curriculum to its intended purpose and ensuring a relentless focus on the basics, which will give schools a fresh opportunity to embrace subjects that support a meaningful education for children across the country.

Without doubt, Design and Technology will benefit from such a vision, giving teachers scope to enhance subject delivery, developing new approaches and incorporating public and private sector initiatives that will help shape the subject’s future.

A decisive factor in achieving this however is the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers, which is at odds with the need for schools across the country to now hold or even cut budgets.

This is why events such as the Design & Technology with ICT show offer teachers great opportunities to develop subject understanding and learn new inspirational ideas and techniques to take into the classroom. The 2010 show has increased the number of free seminars which will reflect Key Stage curriculum changes and the foremost experts in the field will show exemplars and solutions to those teachers facing issues on the ground. Post graduate professional development information will also be available for teachers with subject leadership aspirations.

Expanding on this theme, the Keynote lectures will parallel the continuing drive to modernise elements of the D+T curriculum and these are followed each day by specialist sessions dealing with day to day issues. In addition a daily Workshop programme will give access to the latest curriculum activity, planning and development ideas that will bring more topical classroom projects to life.

New this year will be the STEM ZONE, a dynamic addition showcasing STEMNETS ability to help teachers engage with and inspire young people to develop their creativity, problem-solving and employability skills in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Visitors shouldn’t miss CEO of STEMnet Yvonne Baker’s ‘D & T on the STEM Agenda’ key note talk on Thursday 18th November, together with daily STEM Ambassador presentations.

'Inspiring the Nation to Cook' with Sainsbury’s ‘Active Kids Get Cooking Programme’ will have its own ‘live’ kitchen theatre courtesy of SPACE catering. Children involved in the ‘Active Kids Get Cooking Programme, a collaborative initiative from Sainsbury’s, the Design and Technology Association (DATA) and the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) will be cooking each day, showcasing this year’s Active Kids Get Cooking programme theme, a ‘Sustainable Feast’.

With climate change at the top of the agenda, 'Doing it For the Kids' will pioneer sustainable, innovative  product design in education. On hand to advise teachers how to embrace such projects will be experts from [re]design (www.redesigndesign.com), a social enterprise that propagates sustainable actions through design, seeking out and promoting products and projects that are friendly to people and planet.

Show organiser Andrew Morton of ICHF Events, said “Schools and teachers face tough times in the coming years but with focuses in the curriculum like Cooking and Sustainability coming to the fore it also provides an opportunity to really embrace the D and T subject that will engage and inspire. Key industry expert talks, hands-on workshops for teachers the most cutting edge products from exhibitors covering a wide range of design & technology topics makes the show un-missable!

In an age of gadgets and computer games, research suggests children now have the skills to operate CAD systems and software without barriers, giving teachers a superb opportunity to modernise D+T lessons with stimulating and exciting software to inspire pupils. For this reason, the show will host a number of CAD specialists, with some launching new software packages including SpeedStep and ArtCAM. Experts will also be on hand to give advice on CAD and CAM training, software applications, hardware and maintenance requirements and show examples of pupil and teacher work.

With so much content available free to teachers, the show provides excellent personal development opportunities in the D+T subject area. There is no better way to learn first hand teaching concepts from the innovators at the show who will provide effective techniques and understanding to bring the subjects alive in the classroom!
