Bertrand Joins Operation Lifesaver, Inc. as Director of Internal and External Communications

WASHINGTON, DC, May 14, 2013 – DeQuendre Bertrand has been named director of internal and external communications for Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI, www.oli.org), the nonprofit rail safety organization, OLI President and CEO Joyce Rose announced.

“DeQuendre is an award-winning, multifaceted marketing and communications professional with a wealth of experience managing communications, publications, media relations, and website content for nonprofit organizations,” said Rose. “Her expertise will help Operation Lifesaver, Inc. make greater use of digital technology, social media, and e-Learning to differentiate the OLI brand, increase public awareness and deliver lifesaving education campaigns.”

Bertrand’s career experience includes serving as writer-editor for the professional services firm ESI, communications manager for NABA, Inc., and as an independent consultant with multiple nonprofit clients. She has managed e-mail marketing, audience development, and publications design and production for a number of organizations, including Volunteers of America, the Child Welfare League of America, and the National Association of Social Workers. She started her career as a journalist, writing for New York Newsday and The Bergen Record.

Most recently, she was public relations specialist with Alexandria City Public Schools in Alexandria, VA, where she designed, wrote, edited and produced a variety of publications and handled media relations, marketing, social media and online outreach.

Her awards and accomplishments include the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ 1994 Breaking News Award, a citation in the Poynter Institute's Best Newspaper Writing 1995, a 1998 Society for National Association Publishers’ Silver Award for General Excellence, the National Association of Government Communicators’ 2009 Blue Pencil Award, 2009 Gold and Platinum awards from the Association for Marketing and Communications Professionals and five 2012 Excellence Awards from the Chesapeake Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association.

Bertrand holds a bachelor’s degree from New York University in Journalism and Africana Studies, and a master’s degree from The George Washington University.
