PowerCell receives order for fuel cell system from global bus manufacturer

PowerCell Sweden AB (publ) has received an order for a MS-100 fuel cell system from a global bus manufacturer. The MS-100 is based on the PowerCell S3 fuel cell stack which combines compact design with market leading power density. PowerCell S3 is built with steel plates instead of graphite plates which makes it much stronger and robust. Delivery and installation in bus for field tests is expected to take place during the second quarter 2019.
“Durability and power is what made the customer choose our S3 stack”, Per Wassén, CEO of PowerCell said.

The English version is an in house-translation. In case of any discrepancy, the Swedish text will prevail.

The customer is a well-known bus manufacturer with global sales and has carried out advanced field tests with fuel cell-based drive systems with good experience. The manufacturer, whose name has been withheld upon request of the customer, intends to continue its development of electric buses based on fuel cells instead of batteries, and views the S3 as ideal for the company’s continued assessment of the technology.

“In our PowerCell S3 stack we have a product that combines high power-density with a very compact design”, Per Wassén, CEO of PowerCell said. “Since we are one of very few manufacturers that have managed to develop a stack built on steel plates instead of graphite, we can offer a much more durable stack than our competitors and one which is perfect for mobile applications where stacks have to endure shocks and other stresses during the ride.”

Long experience in fuel cells
The bus manufacturer has a solid experience in the fuel cell technology and has carried out extensive field tests with fuel cell buses. The OEM has however requested PowerCell not to disclose its name.  “An electrification on large scale is unavoidable given the climate crisis and the debate about the harmful diesel emissions”, Per Wassén said. “Some manufacturers have to come to realize that batteries are not the only solution and started the transition to fuel cells early, other are clearly behind. This situation offers a great chance to get the upper hand on competitors and some of our customers are subsequently very reluctant to disclose publicly what they are doing – this is one of the reasons why we unfortunately cannot always release their names.”
