Greenock based British Polythene Industries, Europe’s largest recycler of polythene film, was declared the winner of the 2011 Sustainability Award at the Scotland plc Awards ceremony last week.  The business was recognised for its long term focus on sustainability as demonstrated by several projects including the UK’s first fully ”closed loop" farm plastics recycling scheme, the development of a reusable plastic core initiative and the advancements it has made in film downgauging.

This company fought off stiff competition to win this high profile award which was developed to recognise Scottish plcs with a demonstrable commitment to the environment.  In arriving at their decision the judging panel reviewed independent research on each of the candidate companies that had been undertaken by the University of Strathclyde. This systematic review of policy and performance examined how BPI incorporates care for the environment into its working practices, the opportunities it has taken to work sustainably with its customer base and how it communicates its environmental activities to all its stakeholders.

Speaking of the Award win John Langlands, CEO said: “We are delighted that our environmental commitment has been recognised. BPI has operated sustainably for over 25 years, long before the environmental agenda had the prominence it enjoys today so it is pleasing to see the collective achievements of all at BPI highlighted.” He continued: “Large scale environmental initiatives such as the closed loop recycling scheme are the obvious face of our environmental commitment however this award also acknowledges the many other projects we undertake such as our sponsorship of School Recycling projects and the use of a natural bio-filtration system to control VOC emissions.”
