bpi.visqueen helps school weigh up the benefits of recycling

bpi.visqueen, a leading manufacturer of polythene films for industrial and horticultural applications, is helping a group of Scottish school children to learn more about the benefits to recycling. The Greenock-based business has donated a set of scales which will be used by nearby Gourock Primary in its bid to achieve an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.

An international initiative, the Eco-Schools programme aims to encourage whole-school action for the environment. It is a recognised scheme that accredits schools who make a commitment to continuously improving their environmental performance. It is also a learning resource that raises awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues throughout activities linked to curricular areas.

Gourock Primary has participated in the Eco-Schools programme since 2008 and has already obtained coveted Bronze and Silver Awards under the scheme. The Green Flag Award is the initiative’s top award and is only bestowed after stringent evaluation by external assessors. The scales donated by bpi.visqueen will be used to provide a quantifiable measure of the amount of recyclable waste collected by school in ‘eco-bins’ each week, enabling it to fulfil one of the Award’s key criteria.

We hope our donation of the scales will continue to inspire the children and encourage them in their recycling efforts. Speaking on behalf of Gourock Primary Moira McKay, Deputy Head said: “We are very grateful to bpi.visqueen for the help they have given us. The scales will be a way for the children to further develop numeracy skills when calculating the weight of their weekly recycling. It will also be of great benefit in helping us achieve the Green Flag Award.”
