“Roger’s Kull’s approach of taking the craft form of leatherwork into the fine art world is a concept that I can relate to,” said Hopi artist Gerry Quotskuyva.

(Scottsdale, AZ – August 29, 2011) – Flagstaff area art lovers get a special treat this Labor Day Weekend when master sculptor Roger Kull exhibits his world-renowned pictorial leather sculpture at The Art In The Park show at Wheeler Park. A member of the prestigious Western Artists of America, Kull has broken the “leather craft” barrier and taken his skill in creating three dimensional sculpture on leather into a gallery quality level. He has been creating his signature style of three-dimensional realism for over 30 years.

“Roger’s Kull’s approach of taking the craft form of leatherwork into the fine art world is a concept that I can relate to,” said Hopi artist Gerry Quotskuyva, owner of the Pueblo Sedona Gallery. “It’s fun to question the judges and art critics’ standard concepts and make them think outside of their comfort zone. Roger’s artwork is collected by museums and private art collectors around the world.”

Over 8000 art collectors and art lovers will be attending Flagstaff Art in the Park, a tightly juried fine art and fine craft show which takes place over the Labor Day weekend under the cool pines of Wheeler Park in downtown Flagstaff. This is the Eighteenth annual show. In addition to over 100 local and regional artists there is continuous live music and children play areas.

One of Roger Kull’s masterworks is his leather sculpture, ‘A Santa Fe Gathering.’ The piece incorporates the look of weather wood, tile and stucco on Kull’s usual medium of leather.

“I would like my art to reflect the timelessness of the Santa Fe lifestyle and the environment that inspires it,” Kull says. “’A Santa Fe Gathering’ is part of my Santa Fe collection which can be viewed at Art in the Park. Also, you will see sculptures created with the Western Four Corners Historical View.”

Kull continues, “The Territorial Ranch Santa Fe style has many facets. There’s the Pennsylvania Dutch in the stylized birds on old pottery. You’ll find old wicker and fancy eastern board furniture, fabrics, and clothing all left, literally, on the trail. These traits, combined with the Spanish influence, formed the Territorial Ranch Santa Fe style. This combination of the old materials and items from the environment make a wonderful mixing and blending of textures and colors. From this I created my leather sculpture, A Santa Fe Gathering.”

About Roger Kull – Sculptor

Described as Southwestern Pictorial Leather Sculpture, Kull’s signature style is three-dimensional realism. His recent acceptance into the invitation-only Western Artists of America (WAA) now has him competing at their annual exhibit and show with other sculptors whose work is more traditionally in wood, clay, bronze and stone. Having worked with over 14,000 hides in the 30-plus years of his artistic career shows the incredible demand for his work.

Kull approached his art in a very non-traditional way taking the technique of general leatherwork, and chose only a saddle maker’s knife and clay modeler’s spoon as the sole implements that create his incredible artwork. There is no hammering, no stamping, only a sculpting process that forms the back bone of his technique.

Utilizing the natural hews of leather and specialized dyes along with the colorful blues of turquoise, there is a continuous flow between tradition and innovation creating constant interest in this uniquely sculpted leather.

Kull’s artwork is recognized, appreciated and represented by several prominent galleries and sold internationally. His fine art hangs in the permanent collection of the prestigious Booth Museum of Western Art in Cartersville, Georgia and the Johnson-Humrick Museum in Roscoe Village, Ohio.
