On Sunday 15th May former taxi driver Tony Harvey will be taking on the challenge of running the Bognor Prom 10k to raise funds for local charity Self Unlimited  (formerly known as CARE) where Tony now works. The Charity supports local people with a learning disability from its regional hub at Walberton in West Sussex.

This is not Tony’s first personal challenge. He has recently reached his target weight of 15 stone having lost 16 stone over a period of 18 months!  Tony said, “I realised that it was down to me to control my own health and life and at 31 stone I realised I had to do something about losing weight and setting myself a personal goal.  Now, 2 years later, not only have I reached my personal weight goal, I have also changed my career path and now work as a support worker at Self Unlimited at Walberton near Arundel”.

“Each day I give support to people who overcome challenges on a daily basis.  The tranquil residential setting provides purpose-built accommodation and training facilities for  people  with a variety of physical and psychological challenges presented by a variety of learning disabilities including autism and Down’s Syndrome. In the UK there are almost 1.5 million people with a learning disability,  that is almost 2.5% of the population.”

Tony continues, “I have decided to do the Bognor Prom 10k Challenge to raise vital funds for local services.  Our Charity is committed to providing a range of housing, and occupation and employment opportunities that go to make the difference between just having a life and living it to the full”.

Sarah Shallis, Area Manager-South East Region said: “Tony is a vital part of our team who is full of energy, enthusiasm and is not only, highly self-motivated but is also a great motivator of others. We’re all wishing him the best of luck for the run and appreciate all that he’s doing!”

Nigel Rose, Director of Fundraising & Communications said “Self Unlimited has achieved so much, but we desperately need funding to continue our vital work, especially in the light of the extremely challenging financial climate which could have a devastating effect on the most vulnerable of our population.  Every penny raised helps us to continue providing services and we would like to thank Tony for his personal commitment and wish him the best of luck with his fundraising challenge.”
