Home Improvement Store Funds Habitat for Humanity Building Projects

San Jose, Calif., May 29, 2014-- Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley will celebrate the grand opening if its newest ReStore, a home improvement outlet, located in the City of San Jose’s Environmental Innovation Center (EIC) on May 30.

The 15,000 square foot nonprofit store and donation center, which helps build homes in the East Bay and Silicon Valley, will feature new and gently used furniture, appliances, lighting, cabinets, windows, building materials and much more. Items are sold 50% to 75% off the original retail value.

The EIC, at 1608 Las Plumas Ave., is a first-of-its-kind “green enterprise” facility that houses services for residents and clean tech entrepreneurs – all working for a healthy environment and economy in the region.

“We’re excited to open this new ReStore at the Environmental Innovation Center because we’re meeting two very important aims. One is doing our part to create a more sustainable planet by diverting tons of waste from the landfills each year. The second is to help raise funds for our mission to build safe, affordable homes for families in need.”, said Janice Jensen, President & CEO, Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley.

One hundred percent of net proceeds support Habitat East Bay/Silicon Valley’s mission to build affordable and sustainable housing for families with low-incomes. This is the fourth ReStore to open in the Bay Area and the second in San Jose, the other two are located in Oakland and San Carlos. Together, the Bay Area ReStores help build 5 to 7 Habitat homes each year.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores operate on the generosity of the community and local business. The ReStore encourages donations of new and gently used household items and building materials. Contractors, distributors, manufacturers, retailers, corporations, and individuals can donate surplus building materials, cabinets, appliances, tools and more to help stock the store. The ReStore also offers a rewarding experience for volunteers.

The ReStore accepts re-sellable and re-useable items to use in Habitat home developments, or to sell back to the public. Donations are accepted by calling 1-800-SHOP-090 to schedule a pick-up or coordinate a drop-off at a store. Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley also appreciates fully tax-deductible monetary donations that go to help build safe, affordable housing for those families in need throughout our community.

The new Habitat Humanity ReStore in San Jose will serve the community Tuesday - Friday 10 am - 6 pm and Saturdays 9 am - 5 pm.

About the San José Environmental Innovation Center

The San José Environmental Innovation Center (SJEIC), which opens with a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 30, 2014, brings three much-needed services to San José and the entire South Bay. It includes the Technology Demonstration Center, operated by Prospect Silicon Valley (www.prospectsv.org), to help innovators launch and demonstrate green technologies; a Habitat for Humanity ReStore (www.habitatebsv.org), where residents can buy or donate new and salvaged home improvement goods; and a countywide household hazardous waste (HHW) drop-off facility (www.hhw.org). The City of San José transformed a marginal 46,000 square foot warehouse into a showcase of energy- and water-efficient practices with the help of the federal New Markets Tax Credit program. The City's Environmental Services Department is the property owner and tenant coordinator. For more information about SJEIC, visit www.sjenvironment.org/eic.
