Serneke reaches milestone of more than 1,000 employees

The Construction group Serneke now includes more than 1,000 employees. Around 160 people have been employed at Serneke in the past year.

“This is a milestone for our company, which I am very proud to have reached. We are pleased to know that Serneke is an attractive employer, considering that we expect significant growth in this competitive market. Strong growth has been the strategy of the company since its inception. Our stated long-term objective for 2020 is to reach income of at least SEK 10 billion, and then we will need an even greater number of committed employees,” says Managing Director and Group CEO Ola Serneke, who founded the company in 2002, then under the name Sefa.

Around 160 people have been employed at Serneke in the past year. In the company’s relatively short history, this growth figure has only been exceeded during the period 2012–2013, when the Group grew by almost 200 employees. Since 2010, the number of employees has increased by approximately 110 people a year.

“Our current strategy is to continue to grow in the three metropolitan regions, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. We also see opportunities for continued expansion in the rest of Sweden, mainly in the larger cities but, in the longer term, also in other countries that have a good business climate and share our business outlook and approach. These include, for example, Poland, Germany, and Norway, but also English-speaking countries such as the UK, Australia, and the US. Then the ability to continue attracting skilled employees will become extremely important,” says Ola.

There is a shortage within several occupational categories in the current construction industry boom. Structural engineers, building technicians, and civil engineers are examples of sought-after roles. There is also a shortage of personnel in roles that do not require higher education, such as within carpentry, concrete, and sheet metal.

Although more women are looking to enter the construction industry, a more even gender distribution is another recruitment challenge. At Serneke, the proportion of women increased by 61 percent between 2015 and 2016.

“This is a good figure in terms of percent, but we need to have even more women in the company and within the industry. We are working with the issue in terms of recruitment, by being involved in female networks and by actively targeting women engineers,” says Ola.

“Today, an employer, especially in our industry, needs to offer something more than a good salary. We believe that our corporate culture, which is based on commitment, courage and honesty, combined with a sustainable view of construction, are factors that appeal to young and talented employees. The fact that we also offer a chance to be a part of the company’s value growth, and take into consideration life outside of work, is also important,” says Ola Serneke.
