BGU to Host Conference for Early Years Professionals

Around 100 teachers and other professionals who work with young children are expected to attend a conference at Bishop Grosseteste University next week.

The Early Years Conference on Friday 5th July will take as its theme Development and Learning from Birth to Eight Years of Age.

Giving the keynote speech will be Professor Iram Siraj-Blatchford from the Institute of Education, University of London, who will talk about supporting development and learning in the early years.

“This conference is aimed at all those working in the early years with children from birth to eight years of age,” said Dr Harriet Marland from the School of Teacher Development at BGU.

“Our conference is about active engagement in researching practice to enhance outcomes, and we hope that the combination of research presentations, seminars and workshops will give those attending an opportunity to share ideas and expertise and extend and develop their professional practice.”

Professor Iram Siraj-Blatchford has a national and international reputation for her work in the early years. Her research has focused on the impact of home learning, staff training, pedagogy, curriculum and assessment on young children’s learning and development, particularly those children and families from vulnerable backgrounds.

After her keynote speech at 10am delegates can hear research presentations on a number of topics:

  • Creative Little Scientists
  • Forest Schools in Norway
  • Supporting Early Reading Development
  • To Talk or To Listen
  • From Government Policy on Literacy Teaching to Classroom Practice in England
  • Building Relationships

In the afternoon a workshop and discussion will be held on effective pedagogy to support early years development and learning.

The full-day event begins at 9am on Friday 5th July at Bishop Grosseteste University on Longdales Road, Lincoln LN1 3DY.
