News Release

31st October 2012

A historic Lincoln hotel which was once home to the Bishop of Lincoln will be celebrating the festive season by opening its doors as a restaurant for a limited time.

Usually open for private dining only, The Old Palace situated in Lincoln’s beautiful Cathedral Quarter will be taking bookings for dinner from 5pm until 10.30pm between Thursday 6th and Saturday 8th December while the famous Christmas Market is on.

There’ll be a different menu each evening showcasing the talents of Head Chef Paul Newton from which diners can choose either two or three courses.

The Old Palace Manager Sonja Brockman said: “As The Old Palace is usually only open for private dining this is a great opportunity for people to take advantage of this unique occasion and sample the delightful food we have to offer.

“We would like to welcome people to the restaurant to enjoy a sumptuous dinner in our elegant surroundings located in the beautiful Cathedral Quarter – a fantastic setting in which to celebrate Christmas with friends and family!”

Dishes will range from roast fillet of beef with potato and horseradish rösti, glazed baby onions and port jus to baked monkfish tail, sautéed savoy cabbage, steamed mussels and saffron hollandaise.

Alternatively, shoppers can take a break from the daytime hustle and bustle of the Christmas Market and enjoy winter afternoon tea in the drawing rooms while enjoying magnificent views of the gardens and the city below.

This festive version of a classic includes orange and cinnamon cup cakes, mini mince pies and a glass of mulled wine. Winter afternoon tea is available every day from 1st December until 10th February.

As well as during the Christmas Market The Old Palace will also be opening as a restaurant for Sunday lunch on 30th December when you can choose from their imaginative and seasonal menu.

Christmas parties are also being catered for throughout November and December. Groups of between four and 64 people can celebrate in their own private dining room and even create their own bespoke menu with the help of Head Chef Paul.

Bookings for evening dining, winter afternoon tea during the Christmas market period and Sunday lunch must be made in advance. If you would like to book a table please call 01522 580000.

About The Old Palace

  • The Old Palace was built next to the site of the Lincoln Medieval Bishops’ Palace, which was the administrative centre of the largest diocese in medieval England, in three phases between 1720 and 1885.
  • The ruins of the Medieval Bishops’ Palace are separate from The Old Palace itself and are managed by English Heritage on a guardianship lease from the Diocese of Lincoln.
  • Once home to the Bishop of Lincoln, The Old Palace is now a luxury hotel and conference centre offering 32 beautifully decorated rooms in the main building and in the adjacent Old Palace Lodge – a former Victorian church which has been newly converted.
