Long-awaited refurbishments at a dog rescue centre near Mansfield are a step closer today after fundraising efforts passed another milestone.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue's Nottinghamshire centre in Blidworth near Mansfield is thanking supporters today after it reached the £25,000 mark in its Stepping Stone to a New Home appeal.

The fund aims to raise £250,000 towards the construction of a new centre to replace the existing facilities, which Centre Manager Sapphire McInness said are in desperate need of modernisation.

“These funds will enable us to undertake a complete overhaul of our current site which is too small and in need of quite a lot of repair work,” said Sapphire.

The new facilities will include an isolation intake which will hold up to seven dogs, two rehoming blocks for up ten dogs, a training barn and a veterinary treatment room.

The house and kennels which currently make up the centre will be demolished, and overnight accommodation for staff will be provided in the new facility.

Contractors are expected to begin work on the redevelopment in December.

Since the appeal launched in June the centre has been inundated with donations. A newsletter to supporters prompted donations totalling £3,000 and a further £345 came through the charity’s online JustGiving page.

Among the donations was £150 donated by a ladies’ dog walking group, Ravenshead Rovers, who also pledged proceeds from their forthcoming Christmas fundraisers to help the dog rescue centre in its mission.

“We really appreciate the donations from Ravenshead Rovers and we encourage other groups to get involved as this is an excellent opportunity for them to promote themselves while supporting a great cause,” said Sapphire.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue receives no lottery or state funding and while plenty of donations have already come in there is still a long way to go before dogs at the centre can reap the benefits of new facilities.

The charity welcomes donations of all sizes, but one simple way of supporting the appeal is by buying a brick for just £10. Corporate donations and sponsorship packages are also available.

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

• Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
• Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
• Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
• Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
• Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors
