SIEMENS IN EXPORT DEAL WITH INTERNATIONAL MINERAL SIZER FIRM

Leeds based Siemens Mechanical Drives has landed a substantial export deal to supply International mineral sizing firm MMD with high end manufacturing components designed to improve the efficiency and performance of a new open cast mine in Shouzhou City, in China’s Shanxi Province.

Siemens has designed and manufactured five large gear units to help provide a tailored solution to MMD’s conveyor and feeder drives in operation at the mine. The units were assembled in Leeds, and mark a recent increase in domestic international demand for high end manufactured goods from the site.

MMD designs and manufactures materials processing equipment used in many types of surface and underground mining operations across the world. The company has extended the technology of mineral reduction with the development of low profile, high capacity and compact sizing machines.

Siemens Mechanical Drives received £1.2 million investment last year when transferring its premises from Bradford to Leeds; the site has 54 employees who specialise in the manufacture of intelligent drive systems as well as the production of renewable energy technologies. Work at the site includes gear assembly, geared motors, motors and couplings for the rail, utilities and growing renewable sector, including wind and wave power.

The Leeds site will also see the arrival of a new apprentice in September, announced last week as part of the 160 joining Siemens this year, in a bid to help up-skill young people for the economic recovery.

The Siemens site in Leeds has seen international orders increase over the last year, including major materials handling operators like Metso as well as MMD placing significant orders. The business is expecting to see greater export led growth in the coming months, particularly from the Far East.

Chris Pearson, MMD’s mobile sizer projects director, said: “It’s been very positive working with the team in Leeds, who are well regarded for their internationally recognised and skilled manufacturing base. We have used Siemens gear units successfully for a number of years in our systems and their reliability and worldwide service support are key contributory factors for us.”

Siemens account lead Alex Broadley added: “We’re delighted to be working again with MMD on this important project and we are proud that these units were produced in Leeds and part of our growing export-led offering. We expect orders like these to continue over the medium term and look forward to building the skills base at our site further to meet this increasing demand – starting with the recruitment of our new apprentice in September.”
