Sivers IMA new WiGig chipset reaches world class performance

Sivers IMA today share that they successfully passed an important milestone with the new WiGig RFIC, the TRX BF01/00. During the last months, comprehensive verification and validation activities has been performed at Sivers IMA’s as well as with partners. These validation activities include interoperability tests with several different baseband platforms/modems.

The objective was to make the best beamforming chip including an active antenna for infrastructure applications and the results show state of the art performance and functionality.  The TRX BF01/00 is unique in its approach to address tough infrastructure applications by offering world class phase noise, very wide frequency coverage (14 GHz), robustness and link budgets for longer reach.

The tests confirm the exceptional frequency coverage over the whole band from 57 to 71 GHz, in combination with world class Tx output power, which enables longer reach and greater flexibility than any other beamforming chip at 60 GHz. The throughput achieved fulfills the maximum modulation code rate for Single Carrier - MCS12, which is equivalent to 4,6 Gbps according to the IEEE802.11ad standard.

This proves the TRX BF01/00 is the best suited component for WiGig infrastructure applications available, which is also confirmed by direct customer feedback from customers testing the module.

“As the performance has been one of the key parameters during the design of the RFIC, we are very proud to achieve, for example, world class EVM[1] for the transmitter, surpassing our competitors. This level of EVM [1] show that we already today will comply to requirements that are expected to be part of the next generation WiGig standard, 802.11ay, which will need support for even higher modulation scheme like 128 QAM”, says Anders Storm, CEO of Sivers IMA.

The RFIC offers 7 full channels with a channel bandwidth according to the WiGig standard, which is 4 more than any other competitor. On top of that, this new chip offers extended flexibility by supporting half channels (14 of them) as well as quarter channels (28 of them), which is a great improvement compared to the standard. This gives customers much greater freedom in how to use the system in a real deployed network. The complete RF module offers beamforming capability with an active patch antenna enabling +/- 45 degrees steering angle using the in-house designed low cost patch antenna for infrastructure applications up to 500 meters.

Anders Storm continues: “When engaging with our customers, they clearly see the value of our offering, which brings greater flexibility and more cost-efficient solutions to the overall network deployed. The feedback is very positive and it highlights our superior performance which has been acknowledged in several positive test activities with customers and partners”

Sivers IMA will demonstrate this RFIC live at the Broadband World Forum at Messe Berlin in October 24-26.

[1] Error Vector Magnitude is a measure of how accurately a radio is transmitting symbols within its constellation. EVM is a measure of signal quality, which is a function of noise, interfering signals, nonlinear distortion and the load of the radio.
