Faulty Background Checks Harm Job Seekers

Thousands of job-seekers are being hindered because employers use flawed background-check information taken from unreliable records, according to a new report released by consumer advocates.

About three-fourths of companies require criminal background checks for applicants, according to a 2010 study by the Society for Human Resource Management.

The consumer advocates want the U.S. government to ensure people are aware of what information their prospective employers see so they can correct mistakes and abusive companies can be held liable, according to the Associated Press.

Some common errors include background checks showing criminal records that were supposed to be wiped clean or sealed, listing dismissed charges, and misclassifying minor offences as major crimes.
