New Federal Safety Standards for Infant Swings

In one 12-month period, there were more than 300 infant swing-related incidents, including two deaths and more than 20 injuries. Now a new mandatory safety standard has been approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to make infant swings safer.

The new federal standard will require testing of stability, unintentional folding, and restraint systems, as well as a stronger label about the risk of slump-over deaths, among other changes. The new standards will include cradle and travel swings.

Between May 2011 and May 2012, the CPSC received 351 reports of infant swing-related incidents.

The new standards will take effect May 7, 2013.
