Omnicare Settles Dangerous Drug Lawsuit for $50M

Omnicare has agreed to pay $50 million to settle a dangerous drug lawsuit that claimed it has been illegally providing medications to nursing patients without a doctor’s approved prescription.

The allegations came from an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The issue lied with the manner in which pharmacy managers communicated with medical professionals who write the prescriptions for drugs, according to the Associated Press. The government said that at times, even with an approved prescription, the order sometimes left out the drug name, strength and quantity, and dose.

This settlement is allegedly the second largest in the nation’s history of the Controlled Substances Act regulating drugs, according to the AP.
