Protica Recalls Protein Drinks For Botulism Risk

Protica Inc. recalled four protein drinks for a possible bacterial contamination which can cause serious illness and even death.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the voluntary recall involves the company’s Body Choice "Protein Shots," Nutritional Resources "Protein Wave," ProBalance "Protein to Go French Vanilla Latte," and "Protein to Go Milk Chocolate Shake." Specific lots of these products may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a life-threatening bacterium.

The bacterium can cause a type of food poisoning called botulism with symptoms such as general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, and trouble with speaking or swallowing. It may also cause difficulty in breathing, weakness of muscles, abdominal distension, and constipation.

Though no illnesses have been confirmed to date, consumers are advised not to use these products even if they do not smell or look bad. The consumers can claim a full refund for the recalled products from either the company or the place of purchase.
