Toronto, March 17, 2015:  Canadian photographer George Ching-Yuen Lo from Vancouver today was named the winner of the Canada National Award, part of the prestigious 2015 Sony World Photography Awards.

Ching-Yuen Lo’s winning image “Fighting Bald Eagles” was chosen as the single best photograph taken by a Canadian photographer entered into any of the ten Open categories of the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s biggest photography competition.

“When I heard that I won 1st place in the Canada National Award, it was a complete surprise for me as there are so many great photographers in Canada and in the world that participated in this competition,” said Ching-Yuen Lo.

Ching-Yuen Lo, a Dentist, has won a Sony α7 Digital Imaging Kit with 28 –70 mm Lens camera and his image will be shown as part of the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London from April 24 – May 10. He explains his interest in photography started with his profession.

“I have been a dentist for over 30 years. I need to take photos in my clinical practice. I went to local evening photography classes about 25 years ago and learned about basic black and white photographs.”

Describing the image Ching-Yuen Lo said: “I was on the top of a river cruise boat with my camera in hand when I shot this image on November 11, 2014. It was a combination of location, weather, good lighting, trained skills and luck. I took the image by Harrison River, British Columbia, and there was a salmon fishery nearby. Every November, hundreds of salmons return and die in the shallow river sandbanks. A week before I took this image, the weather was raining heavily and flooded over 80 per cent of the sandbank, washing away the dead salmon. As a result, the eagles were hungry and suddenly they started fighting for food.”

Runner up positions for the Canada National Award were given to:

  • 2nd place - Sandra Fiedler
  • 3rd place – Lise Simoneau

The winners of all 54 National Awards were announced today by the Sony World Photography Awards. The National Awards program honours and rewards the best single image taken by a local photographer and runs across the world from Argentina to Australia.  It is open to photographers of all abilities.  To see all the winning images please go to www.worldphoto.org
