TORONTO – March 15, 2016 – Canadian photographer Kathryn Mussallem from Vancouver, BC is today named as the winner of Canada National Award, part of world’s biggest photography competition, the Sony World Photography Awards.

Mussallem‘s winning image “Sailor in the Spotlight, New Orleans LA, April 2015” was chosen as the single best photograph taken by a Canadian photographer entered into any of the awards’ ten Open categories.

Mussallem, an internationally recognized photographer and instructor of photography at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC, has won a Sony ILCE7RM2/B (A7R II - 42MP/4K Full Frame camera body) & SEL55F18Z (Zeiss 55mm F1.8 AF camera lens). In addition, the winning image will be part of the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London from April 22 - May 8 and will be published in the annual Sony World Photography Awards book. The exhibition will also include the winning and shortlisted images of Professional, Open and Youth competitions alongside the first major European exhibition of the artistic duo and fine art photographers RongRong & inri (China/Japan), recipients of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize at the awards.

Describing the winning image, Mussallem comments: This image was that perfect moment on an overfilled dance floor in a sweaty Bourbon Street bar overrun by sailors during New Orleans Fleet Week 2015. The week where several ships and thousands of sailors roar into port and take over the town as ladies fawn at this invasion of nostalgia and bravado. Camera in hand, I put on my bright red lipstick, slip on my red high heels, hit the street, I see these boys in white and with giddy excitement I approach saying: Hey sailor! New in town?“

Talking about her win, Mussallem continues: "It’s an incredible thrill to be selected and to have this project and labour of love that I have put my heart into honoured by the WPO. With this immersive documentary project I have spent the last 5 years travelling across America photographing the US Navy at work and at play. As a Canadian it is a strange obsession to be chasing the American Navy across the continent but it has become my world. It is a great honour that this work has been recognized and I am happy to share my adventures."

Runner up positions for Canada National Award were given to:

  • 2nd place - Allan Oman for his image titled ‘Fox Pup’
  • 3rd place - Luis Portelles for his image titled Mondrianish’
