Solent fine artists pull in the crowds at end of year show

Fine artists from Southampton Solent University left visitors with plenty to consider following a thought-provoking and entertaining exhibition that included a sculpture made of scrap metal and a food waste café.

The show was a fitting end to the work of the BA (Hons) students who will now go their separate ways after three years at the University’s city centre studios.

Course leader Nicola Chamberlain said: “The final degree show is always interesting because the pieces are as much about the students’ personal development as the work itself. The exhibits are all very special in their own way and demonstrate why our students are focused on being innovative, creative and inspirational.”

Niamh Donoghue’s metal sculpture explored how metal inflicts itself on nature and how nature then reclaims it back. She is staying in the city to work with other local artists and said: “I loved the course, it was amazing. I have had lots of encouragement and given the chance to explore all types of areas. You are given the freedom to figure out what is best for you and Southampton has a thriving art community.”

Jake Leonard focussed on privacy within the family and issues of personal space after his bedroom door came off its hinges! Using a doll’s house as the backdrop he showed a series of short animation films depicting hard-hitting and mundane subjects from domestic violence to washing dishes.  Jake who is about to go travelling in Asia said, “I think this course is unique as they really build you here as an artist. I will never forget this experience and whatever the future holds I will always treasure my time here.”
