BA (Hons) Animation students showcased their final-year work at an exclusive premiere evening in Southampton Solent University’s state of the art in-house 3D cinema.

Family and friends of the final-year students enjoyed 14 three-minute animated films, while bringing a touch of Hollywood glamour to the red carpet in their tuxedos and gowns.

The student film-makers competed for two sought-after awards; the Best Film Award, voted by a panel of industry judges including animation companies such as Bandito and Absolute Post, and the Audience Choice Award, voted live on the night by the audience themselves.

Maria Torregrosa (23) an Erasmus student from Spain, impressed the judges to win the Best Film Award with her beautiful double entries Wander and Ryujin.

The Audience Choice Award was voted as Terry Lee (22) from Chelmsford. His Slip animation wowed the crowd, who reacted audibly to the comic timing and effects of the animation.

Rob Vaughan, Southampton Solent University Associate Lecturer in Animation commented, “It’s great to see how far the students’ skills have come in 3 years, this also provides an inspiration to our first and second year students as to what they can produce by the end of the degree course. The high standard of animation work, made judging the competition particularly difficult this year.”

Rob continues, “Maria has worked exceptionally hard, entering two films into the competition, she’s looking to apply for a scholarship in Japan to further her animation studies. Terry has pushed himself and risen to the technical challenge using complex squash and stretch techniques and 3D software, and has an exciting graduate job lined up at Bandito.”
