Spelman College Visiting Scholar Dwight Andrews to Discuss ‘Living a Creative Life That Bears Witness to a World of Problems and Promise’
Dr. Andrews' Jan. 29 Discussion is Part of Spelman's 2014-2015 Signature Conversations in the Arts Series
ATLANTA (Jan. 28, 2015) -- The 2015 Spelman College Distinguished Visiting Scholar Dwight Andrews, Ph.D., will discuss “Living a Creative Life That Bears Witness to a World of Problems and Promise” as part of the College’s 2014-2015 Signature Conversations in the Arts Series. Dr. Andrews will offer a meditation on his multi-dimensional career as a composer, musician, educator and pastor of First Congregational Church in Atlanta.
The conversation will center on the idea “What I Am Learning…” This theme suggests the immediate and ongoing nature of Dr. Andrews’ self-discovery and the dynamic challenges of living a creative life that bears witness to a world of both problems and promise.
For the first time, Dr. Andrews will frame his rich and distinct experiences into a single reflection about life, work and what he’s learning. “The power and the need of the human spirit to affirm itself through self-critique and creativity is a calling we all share,” said Dr. Andrews, who is considering how the interdisciplinary and seemingly disparate aspects of his vocations are evolving into a single unity of purpose.
During his talk, Dr. Andrews will present brief excerpts of his work. He will also speak to the folly of making a career plan, and the necessity of discipline, preparation, and a sense of humor to be an effective change agent in the world.
The Signature Conversations in the Arts Series is free and open to the public.

Renowned artists who have taken part in the conversation series include Misty Copeland, soloist with the American Ballet Theatre; Alia Jones-Harvey, C’95, Broadway producer; and Paul Carter Harrison, playwright and educator. The next presenter in the series is Aku Kadogo, theater director, choreographer, educator, creative producer and a 2015 Spelman College Distinguished Visiting Scholar. She will present Feb. 3, 2015.

Dwight Andrews
Dwight Andrews, Ph.D., is an associate professor of music theory and African American music at Emory University and is the senior pastor of First Congregational Church UCC in Atlanta and a Detroit native. He holds bachelor’s and master’s of music degrees from the University of Michigan, a master’s of divinity degree from the Yale Divinity School, and a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University. He has taught at Rice, Yale, and Harvard universities. As a musician, Andrews has appeared on over 25 jazz and “new music” recordings. He has also been recognized for his collaborations with playwright August Wilson and director Lloyd Richards, having served as musical director for the Broadway productions of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, The Piano Lesson, and Seven Guitars, and the Broadway revival of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom featuring Whoopi Goldberg and Charles S. Dutton. He provided the music direction for the Broadway revival production of A Raisin in the Sun, starring Sean Combs, Phylicia Rashad, Audra McDonald and Sanaa Latham.
