The “Napa Valley Wine Wave” aims to beat the current world record set in Guangzhou, China

St. Helena, CA, May 1, 2012—The St. Helena Kiwanis Club, in partnership with the wineries of Appellation St. Helena, CHEERS! St. Helena and the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce today announced plans to attempt a Guinness World Record for the longest relay wine toast. Labeled “The Napa Valley Wine Wave,” this history-making event will take place at Charles Krug Winery on Sunday, October 7, 2012. Wine lovers from around the world are invited to participate and surpass the current world record of 321 participants that was set in November 2011 by Shenzhen Sinoauwine in Guangzhou, China.

“A sequential wine toast is a relay toast where participants clink glasses in order, from start to finish, rather than the more common toast where everyone clinks glasses simultaneously,” said Ann Marie Conover, Chairman of the Board for the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce. “The legendary Napa Valley is the heart of the American wine experience but this is a wine experience we’ve not yet attempted as a community. We invite you to join us as we put our hearts and glasses together to raise funds for continuing education while making not just wine history, but world history!”

“The whole town is abuzz about the upcoming Napa Valley Wine Wave,” reports St. Helena Mayor Del Britton. Britton, who is a long-time member of the St. Helena Kiwanis Club, announced today, “It’s not every day that a community can set a world record and this record is something we will tell our grandchildren about.”

To complete the Guinness World Record the relay toast must be done in sequential order, without interruption or mistakes. Upon completion, an Official Guinness Adjudicator will announce whether the new world record has been set. Participants will receive a world record medallion and other items to commemorate the event. Featured that day will be live music, food, wine tasting, and merriment for all to enjoy. Proceeds raised from the event will go towards scholarships in the agriculture, viticulture, winemaking, business and hospitality industries.

To prepare for the event, the St. Helena Kiwanis Club will host “Pre-Clink” practices at CHEERS! St. Helena, the Napa Valley social gathering that takes place the first Friday of every month, May through October. CHEERS! St. Helena attendees will be given the chance to sign up for the event, practice their pre-clink and enjoy some of the finest Napa Valley wines.

“The art of the clink is not as easy as it looks, especially when you expect to have hundreds of people involved,” said Lance Orton, Director of CHEERS! St. Helena. “The Pre-Clink at CHEERS! St. Helena will give you a chance to fine-tune your toasting talents and get you ready for the big event.”
