The Olympic Competition Continues as the U.S. Goes After China’s Guinness World Record®

The “Napa Valley Wine Wave” aims to beat the current world record for the longest relay wine toast

St. Helena, CA, August 13, 2012—The Olympic Flame was extinguished yesterday in London at the closing ceremony, but the competition between the United States and China continues as the U.S. ramps up for the next attempt to beat the Chinese. During the 2012 Olympics, the U.S. led with 104 medals, while China came in second with a total of 87 medals. The next attempt to surpass the Chinese will be an attempt in the Napa Valley to beat China’s Guinness World Record for the longest relay wine toast.

Labeled “The Napa Valley Wine Wave,” this history-making event will take place Sunday, October 7, 2012, in the heart of the Napa Valley, St. Helena. The current Guinness World Record for the longest relay wine toast is held by citizens in Guangzhou, China, who set the record of 321 participants in November 2011.

“Not everyone can compete in the Olympic games, but you can compete in a Guinness World Record attempt,” said St. Helena Mayor, Del Britton. “We invite everyone to come to the Napa Valley and carry on our U.S. tradition by bringing this unique world record to America.”

The longest relay wine toast is a sequential toast where participants clink glasses in order, from start to finish, rather than the more common toast where everyone clinks glasses simultaneously. Upon completion of the attempt, an Official Guinness Adjudicator will announce whether the new world record has been set and participants will receive a world record medallion to commemorate the event.

The Napa Valley Wine Wave was created by the St. Helena Kiwanis Club, in partnership with the wineries of Appellation St. Helena, CHEERS! St. Helena and the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce, as a way to raise money for scholarships. Proceeds raised from the event will go towards scholarships in the agriculture, viticulture, winemaking, business and hospitality industries.

How to Participate in the Napa Valley Wine Wave:

The Napa Valley Wine Wave is open to participants and spectators for a tax-deductible entrance fee. To participate as a record-setter, attendees much purchase a participant ticket for $100. Those who want to enjoy the event as spectators are invited to purchase Spectator tickets for $35.
