St James’s, London, will soon welcome international fashion house Tiger of Sweden, the Scandinavian brand, in the first of a line-up of new retailers locating to London’s newest menswear destination, part of The Crown Estate’s latest development, St James’s Gateway. Established in 1903, Tiger of Sweden is known for their modern, sharp look and contemporary jeans collection based on their philosophy: “A Different Cut”.

As the first dedicated UK store for Tiger of Sweden, which currently distributes to 18 countries worldwide, the new store on Piccadilly provides the perfect location for their new global flagship store. The building has been designed by award winning Eric Parry Architects and will merge rich history with a modern and luxury shopping experience. Turner Prize winner Richard Deacon and Tate London sculptor Stephen Cox have designed bold public art which complements the architecture of this latest central London shopping destination.

The opening of St James’s Gateway forms part of a £500 million investment vision by The Crown Estate, reinvigorating Piccadilly whilst recognising the distinctive nature of St James’s, the leading menswear destination specialising in bespoke tailoring.

Located in Princes Arcade, British men’s heritage label Smart Turnout also recently chose St James’s for their first UK store. Other recent openings in St James’s include shoemakers JM Weston, as well as The Left Shoe Company who combine traditional skill with state of the art technology to create one-off, personalised pairs of shoes. Following the success of Sicilian restaurant Cicchetti, which launched in 2012 as the first London location for the San Carlo Group, Philippe Le Roux will be opening his flagship restaurant, Villandry, in Waterloo Place later this year. After a £5million redevelopment by The Crown Estate, Villandry is set to serve up to 600 covers a day in three dining areas. Independent coffee house Borough Barista has also opened on Charles II Street, serving light breakfasts and lunches, pastries and cakes, and freshly ground coffee.

NOTES TO EDITORS

The Crown Estate is investing £500 million into St James’s over the next 10 years with a focus on developing the area in line with its core values: personal, distinctive, stimulating and eclectic. The Crown Estate’s holdings now comprise of nearly half of all the buildings in the area, totalling 4 million sq ft.

A major component of the investment plan is The Crown Estate’s St James’s Gateway development, located between Piccadilly Circus and Jermyn Street. This 100,000 sq ft development will provide prime West End space for retail, office and residential use with external displays of public art by Royal Academicians Richard Deacon and Stephen Cox. Another large focus of the investment strategy is St James’s Market, which is to be redeveloped to preserve historic facades together with public realm enhancement to create 245,000 sq ft of office, retail, restaurant and leisure accommodation.

The Crown Estate is committed to enhancing the area through a proactive tenant mix strategy, continued refurbishment of some of London’s most historic landmark buildings and improved streetscape to encourage pedestrian dwell time. The St James’s development will secure the area as one of London’s most sought after retail destinations.
