This year Stockholm Film festival celebrates its 25th anniversary. As a part of the celebration, the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has chosen to design an ice sculpture that will be uncovered during the inauguration ceremony on November 4th.

In 2013, Ai Weiwei was one of the members of the Film Festival jury. However, since he wasn’t allowed to leave China, he sent an empty chair named ”The Chair for Non- attendance” as symbol of his absence.

"I believe the Stockholm film festival consistently promotes high quality cinema and art. I am very honored and proud to be able to contribute this ice sculpture to celebrate the event. Thank you.”, says Ai Weiwei.

He is still not allowed to leave China, instead Ai Weiwei will send a special made design that will be portrayed in the form of a large ice sculpture symbolising this years’ Spotlight theme - HOPE. The sculpture will be presented during the inauguration ceremony that takes place Tuesday November 4th, 5 pm, at Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm. The project has been made possible together with the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi and their sculptors. Lumination of Sweden will create the lighting.

Ai Weiwei is regarded as one of the most influential and subversive artists of his time, with art exhibitions all over the world, for example at MoMA, Tate Modern, Jeu de Paume in Paris and Martin Gropius in Berlin. He relentlessly campaigns for freedom of expression.

The 25th Stockholm International Film Festival November 5-16 2014.

Stockholm International Film Festival started in 1990 and is today one of the leading competitive film festivals in Europe. The festival takes place every year in November with over 200 films from more than 60 countries. More than a festival: we organize exclusive screenings and the popular Summer Cinema – an outdoor mini-festival. Every year in spring the Stockholm International Film Festival Junior brings the latest films to youngsters between 6 and 16 years of age.

WE LOVE FILM!
