After 30 June 2017, it will no longer be possible to pay with the old 1, 2 and 5-krona coins and the old 100 and 500-krona banknotes.

There are still old coins to a value of SEK 2 billion and old banknotes to a value of SEK 13 billion out in circulation. The coins correspond to a total weight of 9,500 tonnes, as much as eight Vasa ships. The banknotes could cover 70 football fields if laid out flat.

Denomination Millions SEK million
100 21 2,139
500 22 11,030
1 1,083 1,083
2 4 8
5 194 970

“To make sure you don't still have these coins or banknotes when they have become invalid, you should take action now and not wait until the last minute. Shops may find it difficult to manage large volumes of banknotes and coins at once. If you have only small amounts, the easiest thing is to use them to buy things, otherwise you can deposit them in a bank account,” says Christina Wejshammar, Head of the Cash and Payment Systems Department.
