Plans to build a new railway station on the Continental Line in the Rosengård district of Malmö have entered a new phase. Earlier this year, Sweco’s architects submitted the winning proposal for architectural design of Rosengård Station. Now the company’s engineers have been contracted for the continued process of studying and planning the station.

“Rosengård Station is an important hub in development of the district. It is hoped that the station will increase accessibility to the district and that people in movement will create the security desired by local residents,” says Wolfgang Liepack from the City of Malmö.

Rosengård Station will be located at one of Malmö’s main approaches for automobile traffic and will be connected to the rest of the public transport system and future light rail lines. The first section of the station will be built south of Amiralsgatan, but the idea is for the station to grow and in the second phase to also extend to the northern side.

“The goal is to create an open and attractive station for visitors and travellers. The location and the area’s complex traffic conditions present several challenges,” says Jonas Svensson, Assignment Manager at Sweco in Malmö.

Planning and design will take place during the autumn and construction is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2011 when the City Tunnel has opened and traffic on the Continental Line is expected to decrease. The clients are the City of Malmö and the Swedish Transport Administration.

Sonia Andersson is responsible architect for the proposal, which was submitted earlier this year.
