Sweco has partnered with BAM Nuttall, which was appointed to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Construction Partner framework, to provide design and construction services for the modernisation of research facilities in the Antarctic.

“The modernisation work within this project will require a diverse range of skills, including civil and structural engineering, building services, in the energy and environment sectors. We are very happy that Sweco has been chosen as a partner in this project, reinforcing our position as the European leader”, says Tomas Carlsson, president and CEO of Sweco.

Sweco’s UK team will manage the project and Sweco’s multi-disciplinary expertise across Europe will be utilised to deliver the various design elements.

“We are extremely pleased to work with BAM Nuttall’s on this project to modernise the British Antarctic Survey’s research facilities. We look forward to applying our cold climate design and construction expertise on such a high profile project“, says Max Joy, Managing Director for Sweco in the UK.

The total investment amounts to approximately 115 million euros, of which Sweco's services is a smaller portion. The programme is commissioned by the Natural Environment Research Council and will take place over the next ten years. It will enable British scientists to continue vital research into major issues facing the planet. Before work on the first stage of the project is due to commence in October 2017, a fact-finding mission to the Antarctic will take place, with Sweco experts travelling to the area.
