CORPUS CHRISTI — Propane Autogas: Fueling Texas, the educational campaign from the Propane Council of Texas, made a splash at the Texas Sheriffs’ Association’s 135th Annual Training Conference and Expo in Corpus Christi. From July 20-23, Texas sheriffs gathered to learn about the latest developments in law enforcement technology, including clean, domestically-produced propane autogas.

Law enforcement fleets that switch to propane autogas save 30-50 percent on fuel costs. One Central Texas law enforcement fleet, Williamson County, saved $73,000 on fuel costs in 2012. Autogas vehicles are also environmentally friendly, producing fewer harmful emissions and contributing to cleaner air in the communities sheriffs serve and protect.

“Propane autogas is a great choice for sheriffs because it’s dependable, safe and reliable,” said Jackie Mason, Education and Marketing Director of the Propane Council of Texas (ProCOT). “Not only does autogas save taxpayer dollars, but it’s domestically produced. Choosing autogas strengthens both the U.S. and Texas economies.”

Autogas tanks are 20 times more puncture resistant than gasoline tanks and can withstand up to four times the pressure, making autogas tanks more durable in an accident. Propane autogas has a lower flammability range than any other conventional fuel; in one independent study, autogas tanks withstood direct hits from a variety of bullet calibers. Also, autogas vehicles achieve similar range, torque and towing capacity as traditionally fueled vehicles.

In addition to some OEM options, EPA-certified conversion kits are available for both older and newer vehicle models. With more than 700 fueling stations across Texas—or the option of installing an on-site fueling station at a low cost—sheriffs can drive autogas vehicles with peace of mind.

Federal and statewide incentives may be available to offset the costs of conversion and refueling infrastructure. For more information, visit www.FuelingTexas.com.

Propane Autogas: Fueling Texas is a public awareness campaign that educates Texans about the benefits of running fleet vehicles and equipment on clean-burning, domestically produced propane autogas. The campaign features a series of statewide autogas presentations and road shows to provide fleet operators, drivers and community members a hands-on experience with clean autogas technology.
