Declaring War on Non-Communicable Diseases

Whether you want to believe it or not—non-communicable diseases are largely self-inflicted.   This past year, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared war on “non-communicable diseases” (NCDs) such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and lung conditions like asthma and emphysema.  NCDs account for more than 63 percent of all deaths worldwide, killing 36 million people a year.  A recent WHO report said that the incidence of NCDs could be avoided or postponed with an expenditure of less than $1 per year per person in poorer countries and $3 per person in richer countries, with an average of about $1.20 per person per year worldwide.

The top items in the WHO’s prevention plan include tobacco control, a reduction of sugar, fat and salt in processed foods, annual check-ups and selective screening along with basic generic drugs for heart patients.

“The first three items can and should be incorporated by everyone immediately, and the top two cost nothing,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).  “In fact, they would save individuals money.  Eliminating smoking and consumption of refined and processed, sugar, fat and salt laden foods would probably result in an 80%+ reduction in the incidence of NCDs.”

“NCDs are not something you catch,” adds the Griesels.  “They are conditions one creates from chronically poor diet and lifestyle choices.  Smoking alone is estimated to be responsible for 9% of deaths worldwide.  There are no numbers or estimates for deaths associated with eating a diet based around refined, processed, chemical-laden, manufactured foods, but you can bet they are mainly responsible for the epidemic rise in NCDs and are the cause of death in more than 50% of our worldwide population.”
