Is Being Fat or Lean Healthier?

When assessing your level of health, say the Griesels, your weight is just one of many factors that need to be considered.  There are many lean people who are not healthy, so weight alone is not always the determining factor.

“Should All Obese People Lose Weight?” asked a CNN.com article back on August 16.  Its premise:  Not every obese person exhibits health problems, so maybe these particular individuals don’t need to lose their excess fat.  It further questioned whether being obese automatically means you’re unhealthy.

“Not everyone obese will have medical problems at a particular time,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).  “There are also chain smokers who do not currently have medical problems.  But is there any health expert who would question whether they should quit smoking immediately?”

Even for obese chain smokers with no discernible health problems, say the Griesels, there is little question they would live longer and experience better quality of life if they were at a healthy weight and didn’t smoke.  “Never forget, these people are the exception, not the rule,” Dian notes.  “For at least 80% of the population, not smoking and maintaining a healthy body is critical for good health; and for the other 20%, it is highly likely to improve their overall health, longevity and quality of life.”
