A recent study involving 772 overweight and obese adults in Germany, Australia and the UK found that they were more likely to slim down if they participated in a commercial weight-loss program like Weight Watchers than if guided by their primary healthcare provider alone.
“Although Weight Watchers is very popular, we have observed that many who have followed the program for years tend to be yo-yo dieters,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). “They lose and regain over and over, never experiencing lasting results. With people we know, the inside joke is that the only thing we have ‘watched’ over the years is their weight gradually get higher and higher after each attempt. If it is not something that can be easily and consistently incorporated into your life, you will fail.”
