Award winning tour operator recognized for corporate social & environmental responsibility

November 2011, Toronto -- The Travel Corporation Canada (www.thetravelcorporation.com) proudly accepted the coveted 2011 World Travel Market Global Award recognizing their initiatives, both globally and locally, to reduce their impact on the environment and for being socially responsible corporate citizens.

The Travel Corporation Canada headquarters has displayed a proactive approach to local initiatives though their involvement in activities such as a food sorting drive for The Daily Bread Food Bank, a non-profit, charitable organization that is fighting to end hunger in their communities. Through numerous fundraisers, they have raised money for Baphumelele Children’s Home for abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned children in South Africa, as well as for the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross. The employees have also participated in local charitable events including Toronto Pearson Airport’s annual Runway Run in support of various health organizations and community based activities such as the City of Toronto’s “Clean Up the Community Day”.

As leaders in the industry, the organization’s valuable global efforts have raised awareness of both culturally and environmentally significant issues, while educating their travellers through global projects and promoting sustainable tourism through supporting conservation initiatives. Such projects include support of the ecologically endangered Atlantic Forest in Brazil and conducting research and restoration in Venice. Their brand Contiki Holidays has developed a strong partnership with world-renowned environmentalist, Céline Cousteau in an effort to raise awareness of marine ecosystems through their designated ocean conservation projects. With their Uniworld brand, they have worked to reduce the environmental impact of river cruising on the Nile in Egypt. The Conservative Foundation has also provided more than $2 million to organizations around the world, including Conservation International, the World Wildlife Fund, Tourism Cares, The Travel Foundation and the World Travel & Tourism Council, to fund projects further supporting responsible tourism development and conservation.

The World Travel Market, now in its 35th year, is the leading global event for the travel and tourism industry.  It attracts almost 48,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and international press, who congregate in London every November to network, negotiate and discover the latest industry opinions and trends. WTM's Global Media Network, comprising of key travel industry media around the world, recognizes organizations and individuals whom have contributed to their region's travel and tourism industry. The Travel Corporation Canada was nominated by Canadian Travel Press, and its president, David McClung, jointly presented the award with Chairman of the Reed Travel Exhibitions’ World Travel Market, Fiona Jeffery.

“The global reach of The Travel Corporation Canada's conservation work is impressive and its commitment to not only preserving the tourism attractions we already have, but also to the future of tourism, is something we can all be proud of,” said Jeffery.

“It was an honour to attend the World Travel Market to accept this prestigious award,” said Jeff Element, President of The Travel Corporation, Canada. “On behalf of The Travel Corporation and The Conservation Foundation, I would like to thank the Canadian Travel Press for their nomination and to the Reed Travel Exhibitions for recognizing our important efforts. I am very proud to be part of an organization that takes corporate social and environmental responsibilities very seriously and through our ongoing efforts, we will continue to expand our global and local initiatives far into the future.”
