Busworld 2015 – a milestone show for BYD with three premieres: Pure electric double decker, artic and midibus all make their debut

Report this content

As by far the world's largest maker of pure electric buses, BYD is underlining the strength of its offering by unveiling not one but three all new buses at Busworld 2015 – the world's first pure electric double decker, the biggest capacity electric bus that BYD ever built – a 150 passenger 18 metre articulated bus, and a new to Europe 8 metre midibus.

On stand No 951, BYD is showing its 10.2m double decker and 18m articulated bus, while the 8m midibus and 12m single decker can be seen in the demonstration area.

Designed especially for service in the world's ‘double decker capital’ – London, BYD’s 10.2m double decker (making its World Premiere) is the bus some said could never be built: a pure electric double decker. BYD took up the challenge and delivered the bus in just two years – five go into service on a key Transport for London route straight after Busworld.

Also making its World Premiere is the BYD 18m articulated bus. With capacity for 150 passengers, this is the largest pure electric bus ever built and is configured for the many European cities where double deckers cannot operate. The Busworld vehicle is fitted with an optional overhead pantograph which allows recharging in just 1.5 hours from 0 to 100% when the bus is in the bus station or depot. The bus has a range on a single charge of 220km under UITP SORT conditions.

As well as the two high capacity buses on its stand, BYD is introducing another new pure electric bus to the European market - the BYD 8m midibus which has previously only been sold in China. This is the first time it has been seen in Europe. The show bus is to China market specification but a European version will be available shortly.

BYD’s standard length 12m single decker has been trialled in almost 50 cities across Europe. The vehicle, which is available for test rides, is one of the fleet of 35 supplied to Amsterdam Schiphol airport where they transport passenger between the terminal buildings and their aircraft. The BYD 12m ebus picked up an ‘Eco Label’ from the European Coach Week jury immediately before Busworld.

Launching this dramatic widening of its ebus range (previously restricted to the 12 metre single decker model), Isbrand Ho, Managing Director of BYD Europe, said: “We can now offer operators an emissions free solution for every bus type meaning there can be no reason to further postpone going electric, not tomorrow but today. We have effectively eliminated range anxiety with our ever improving battery technology, we can offer innovative financing packages and we have enhanced our support team in Europe.”

“Sales of our ebuses are now taking off – the latest contract for 51 for Transport for London with bodies by Alexander Dennis (ADL) is a milestone and follows the fleet of 35 ebuses now in service at Amsterdam Schiphol airport. With the much wider range of products we are unveiling today we can now meet every demand”, said Mr Ho, who went on to hint at a further imminent development of the BYD-ADL relationship.

Commenting on the new bus, Leon Daniels, Transport for London’s Managing Director for Surface Transport, said at Busworld today: “BYD is a big player in this market and has invested heavily in developing the battery technology and also battery management technology. BYD has excellent facilities which I have seen for myself for manufacturing and testing. BYD is a world leader and we hope its commitment will continue to grow and that we will see rising numbers of all-electric vehicles produced with longer ranges and lower unit costs. It is also exciting to see BYD work in partnership with Alexander Dennis who have a well-established reputation in London and Europe. So, this is an exciting time to be enhancing the fleet with rapid developments in battery technology and benefitting from BYD’s research and development in this area.”

Mr Daniels pointed out that London’s 9,000 strong bus fleet carries 6.5 million passengers a day, more than Paris and New York combined.

BYD ebus: full range introduction at BusworldThree new pure electric models unveiled

Part 1: Pure electric buses, the only way

This year at Busworld BYD is launching three all new pure electric buses which dramatically increase its capability to serve all sectors of the European market.

The star of the BYD stand (No. 951) will be the world’s first pure electric double deck bus. The model on show has been developed specially for the UK market (although interest in this type of bus is growing in many countries) and is due to enter service in London shortly after Busworld. Also on the stand is the European premiere of BYD’s 18 metre articulated bus with a capacity to carry up to 150 passengers. Outside the hall but also on show is the all new 8 metre midibus, shown in Chinese market specification but destined for European sales soon. In addition, the latest and much enhanced version of the BYD 12 metre single deck bus is available for demonstration rides.

BYD ebus 10.2 metre double-decker

The BYD 10.2m double-decker is specially designed for London, UK, home to the world’s largest fleet of double deckers. It is planned to enter service in London this October, as announced by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson at the end of June this year.

Equipped with advanced wheel-hub motors and a 345kWh battery capacity, the double-decker electric bus can cover 300km on a single charge under the UITP’s SORT test conditions.

The highlights of BYD double-decker specification include (see full specification enclosed):

BYD ebus 12 metre (shown in Schiphol Airport airside configuration)

The BYD 12m ebus picked up an ‘Eco Label’ from the European Coach Week jury immediately before Busworld.

The three-door 12m ebus has only two battery packs which feature more powerful batteries (all previous ebuses in Europe have had three packs – the new arrangement provides European-style passenger space and better visibility for the driver). The packs deliver a range under UITP SORT test standards of 240km and can be fully charged within 4 hours from a 60 kW power source. Off-peak charging offers even more economic savings.

Enhanced space for passengers

A low, fully flat floor throughout the wide corridor and increased space between the wheel arches all facilitate entry into and movement on board. Thanks to the higher energy density of the batteries, the bus needs less space for batteries and offers greater overall carrying capacity for 90 passengers.

Quiet comfort in a well-designed interior

Based on BYD’s unique technology, the BYD ebus delivers an extremely quiet and comfortable experience for passengers and other road users – both inside and outside. The passengers enjoy the bus not only for environmental reasons, but also for its quiet, air-conditioned comfort.

Customization

Different interiors can be tailor-made according to customers’ requirements, providing more operating flexibility.

Clever drivers cab means safer driving

The large front windshield covering two thirds of the front assures a wide angle of vision for drivers. The ergonomic design in the driver’s seat and various adjustable devices for maintaining an optimum posture help to mitigate driver’s fatigue. Additionally, the completely contained driver’s cab protects the driver from distractions.

Integrated instrument panel

The BYD ebus instrument panel has a large TFT screen with superior brightness and contrast. Logically organized gauges and controls provide the ultimate in driving convenience.

BYD ebus 18 metre Articulated

The BYD articulated ebus is the first 18 metre model for the European market and the first ever with pure electric power.  Offering the ultimate capacity in the single deck ebus range, the artic provides 51 passenger seats and a total passenger capacity up to 150. It includes two passenger compartments, in-wheel traction motors, and an additional battery module.

With brand new interior and exterior design, the 18m ebus is equipped with LED strip lamps and adaptive instrument panel, which helps the drivers find their most comfortable driving position easily.

A major attraction of the 18m ebus is that it can be alternatively charged from a roof-mounted pantograph, which allows charging quickly when the ebus is parked temporarily for example in the bus station, with a charging speed more than twice as fast as traditional charging methods.

BYD ebus 8 metre midibus

The BYD 8m ebus is also being shown for the first time in Europe and fully supports BYD ‘green cities’ vision. It can travel up 230km under UITP SORT conditions on a single charge and can be fully charged within about 2 hours from a 60 kW power source. It is safe and reliable with a high strength steel chassis, aluminum body, regenerative braking system and fire extinguisher system, in the rear and battery compartments.

The BYD 8m ebus could be a good choice the historic cities with narrow streets. For the European market the bus will provide 24 passenger seats but is currently only available in China (the bus on show is to Chinese specification – a European version is under development).

Part 2: What can be expected from the BYD electric bus?

Iron-Phosphate battery technology

The power battery for an electric bus needs to meet exacting requirements for safety, energy density and low cost. BYD’s safe, reliable and environmentally friendly long life Iron-Phosphate battery is the best choice to meet all of these demanding criteria. Under normal conditions, BYD’s Iron-Phosphate battery can retain over 75% of its capacity after 10 years’ use.

The Iron-Phosphate battery contains no heavy metals or toxic electrolytes and with no pollution or emissions during the production process. Furthermore, the spent batteries can be recycled with minimal environmental impact. The 12m BYD ebus is able to run 260km on a single charge in typical urban conditions. Two battery packs with a capacity of 270kWh can be mounted in various positions to enable flexible interior layouts and requirements. A further pack to provide enhanced range can also be installed. With the benefit of BYD’s research and development capability, the density and capacity of the BYD Iron-Phosphate battery is growing steadily every year.

Technical advantages

BYD’s in-house developed motor controller has integrated on-board charger controls which monitor the functions of the motor, allowing the driving motor to reverse the direction of current when required. The distributed Battery Management System consists of the signal collector and controller, which has the capability of constantly inspecting every single cell’s working status.

The BYD ebus also features a Regenerative Braking System. This system converts part of the kinetic energy during deceleration or downhill driving into electricity and stores this “bonus energy” in the battery providing additional driving range.

The BYD in-house-developed rear drive axle installed on the ebus is the core technology in the BYD electric buses. The rear drive axle system integrates the wheel-hub drive and regenerative braking technologies, and at the same time, provides exceptional passenger comfort.

In the ebus range, different body types, interiors and loading capacity can be tailor-designed according to customers’ requirements, and thus providing operational flexibility.

Designed to be corrosion-resistant for a service life of more than 20 years, the integral aluminum body not only delivers the lowest possible curb weight, but also ensures optimum performance while reducing energy consumption.

The 12m BYD ebus has received the EU’s Whole Vehicle Type Approval, WVTA for short, allowing it to be sold in all EU member states without the need for individual national approval. The energy consumption of BYD ebus is around 130kWh/100km in urban conditions. It saves up to 80% of the fuel cost when compared to a traditional diesel bus. The longer you drive, the more you will save.

With a distinctive appearance, the BYD ebus is in tune with the modern design style demanded by forward looking operators in the public transport sector. Many details, such as the clear and sleek lines on the front, the blue and silver oval logo and the alloy wheels, all accentuate the strong design identity. The ebus is available in a range of colours to meet regional operator requirements and livery styles.

On-board charging system

The BYD AC on-board charging system is a newly developed technology for an electric bus. The cost and space occupation are much less than that of an off-board DC system and the AC on-board charging system is also easier to operate.

Fully proven

BYD is now by far the world’s largest manufacturer of full size electric buses. The BYD ebus has been proven by millions of kilometres of passenger-carrying service in China and elsewhere.

BYD ebus has been tested worldwide in more than 160 major global cities, including – in Europe – Madrid, Salzburg, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Tel Aviv, Budapest and London; and – in the Americas – New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, Bogota, São Paulo and so on.

Each city received BYD electric buses to conduct their own programme of tests on operational cost-effectiveness and return on investment of the new technology. The encouraging test data and financial figures demonstrate the outstanding reliability and efficiency of BYD’s unique electric system.

The Dutch island of Schiemonnikoog has converted its entire bus fleet to pure electric BYD ebuses and a fleet of 35 units has entered service at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam.

In Shenzhen, China, 780 ebuses have been delivered to Shenzhen Bus Group Company. By the end of August 2015, the accumulated mileage was about 83 million km, with that for a single bus being more than 0.27 million km.

In July, 2015, BYD and Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), Europe’s fastest growing bus and coach builder, formed a powerful new alliance and confirmed a £19 million deal that will see the introduction of London’s first large-scale, zero-emission, single deck bus fleet – 51 units of 12m single deck ebuses. This will also be the single largest fleet of full size electric buses in Europe.

In August, 2015, Denver’ Regional Transportation District in the USA announced to purchase 36 new BYD electric buses for mall service.

In September, 2015, BYD is awarded a "dominant" win in the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Heavy Duty Bus RFP which allows for the purchase up to 800 pure electric heavy duty buses.

Part 3: BYD’s green dreams and strategy

BYD’s three green dreams

BYD has three green dreams: electric vehicles, battery energy storage stations and solar farms. The first dream of replacing conventional fossil fuel vehicles by electric vehicles to reduce emission and pollution is coming true gradually. BYD believes that replacing the use of fossil fuels – which will run out one day – is essential. Renewable and emissions free energy sources, particularly solar energy, will be key to the long term solution to the global energy crisis.

Green City Solution

BYD has created its Green City Solution aiming to electrify urban public transportation systems by transitioning from gasoline and diesel powered buses and taxis to pure electric ones. Besides electric vehicles, BYD also provides related services such as charging facilities, charging station monitoring systems and after-sale service, all-in-all a one-stop-shop solution.

BYD 7+4 Strategy

Earlier this year BYD Founder & Chairman Wang Chuanfu revealed BYD’s new industrial and consumer vehicle electrification strategy called ‘7+4’.

7 stands for the 7 conventional vehicle fields which BYD will focus on with its batter electric technology: Bus, Taxi/Private Hire Vehicle, Coach, Logistics Operations Goods Vehicle, Construction Vehicle and Waste Management Vehicle.

4 stands for the 4 specialized vehicle fields BYD will focus on again with its battery electric power: Dump Truck, Aircraft Towing Tractor, Forklift and Airside Service Vehicle.
