September 16, 2015: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, on behalf of the UN-DESA and China Energy Fund Committee (CEFC) project Powering the Future We Want - Recognizing Innovative Practices in Energy for Sustainable Development, granted BYD Company Ltd. an award – in recognition of its contribution to advancing access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all – at the project’s award ceremony held at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 14, 2015. This is the first time in its history that the UN develops a project for the renewable energy sector, aiming at advancing the implementation of sustainable development by identifying innovative practices in renewable energy, promoting innovative solutions and recognizing leadership and commitment in meeting the energy challenge.

BYD was the only automaker participating in the event, as well as the only Chinese participant. The award ceremony – in which BYD Motors VP, Mr. Brendan Riley, received the award from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon – and ensuing seminar – in which Mr. Riley outlined BYD’s contribution to sustainability in transportation and energy storage, as well as the company’s global footprint – marked the third time BYD took part in a UN event since last year. The first was the UN Climate Summit 2014, followed by the Every Woman Every Child High Level Retreat. Such recognition and interaction with the UN are invaluable for BYD to consolidate and advance its sustainable energy platform.

This year BYD has found itself closer than ever to the fulfillment of its “three green dreams”, or more technically speaking, the creation of a Zero Emission Energy Ecosystem, which consists of effective and affordable solar power generation, energy storage and transportation. The company has greatly expanded its presence in the renewable energy storage business, as well as its Electrified Public Transportation Solutions worldwide with a series of storage stations chiefly in the US and Europe; and the recent entrance into Japan with its fully electric urban buses – a first for a Chinese automaker in the country – and the inclusion of BYD in a supplier list for an 800 electric bus order to the state of Washington, USA. Its Sustainable Urban Mobility solutions can now be found in over 160 cities in 36 countries, making it the top global maker of Electric Buses and Battery Storage Systems. Its recent technological breakthroughs in solar power generation are likely to place the company in yet another position of global leadership.
