UNIQOTEQ announced today the launch of QSurf, an innovative 3G-based web-on-TV solution specifically designed for emerging markets. QSurf offers a full web experience with easy access to all relevant services and personalized content on any TV set. It also stores thousands of images, songs, and videos that can be easily transferred from a mobile phone and shared with friends and family. All this, wrapped with an aspirational design and an intuitive and adaptive user interface, delivers an easy, affordable and social web experience for the whole family. QSurf is all consumers need to drop in the web wave.

QSurf’s intuitive and adaptive user interface makes surfing more interesting and effortless than ever before. QSurf always brings up content that is relevant for each individual, because it learns what they like and understands their preferences. “QSurf’s user experience builds on the consumer’s current media consumption behaviour, merging the convenience of TV with the relevance of web browsing” says Terhi J. Vapola, UNIQOTEQ’s Chief Executive Officer.

Internet access is evolving in two directions according to consumers’ motivation: individual (personal device, e.g. smartphone) and social (shared device, e.g. Smart TV). For lower and middle income consumers in emerging markets, given their reduced set of available options, social web access tends to be more important than it would be for higher income consumers, who can afford multiple devices and switch between them as their motivation varies. Besides, lower and middle income consumers are rarely able to get access to a high quality broadband connection, something that higher income consumers take for granted. QSurf is positioned precisely for this target group, as it offers an easy, affordable, and social web experience.

“QSurf makes no compromises. It is the first web-on-TV solution to offer a 3G-based full browsing experience. The wireless remote control, with full keyboard and touchpad, brings the web to the convenience of your sofa. It is also a Wi-Fi hotspot and the brains of a Smart TV, all packaged in an aspirational design and ready to use directly out-of-the-box” says Jussi Hakunti, UNIQOTEQ’s Chief Technology Officer.

QSurf’s innovative approach is the perfect example of leapfrogging in technology diffusion. “Just like the first phone call made by teenagers in emerging markets is likely to have been on a mobile phone, the first web experience of their younger siblings is likely to be on a TV”, says Antonio Torres, UNIQOTEQ’s Chief Marketing Officer.

Alberto Torres, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for both Opera Software and Bang & Olufsen and an advisor to UNIQOTEQ, believes that “Making the internet available to the five billion people not using it today is one of the greatest human and business opportunities. UNIQOTEQ's innovative web-on-TV solution has a tremendous potential to bring the internet to another level of affordability and ease of use”. UNIQOTEQ’s mission is to turn this potential into reality.
