United Way of New York City Receives $100,000 Grant from Bank of America
Food Support Connections Grant Will Benefit New Yorkers Eligible for the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
NEW YORK, NY – United Way of New York City (UWNYC) has been awarded a $100,000 grant from Bank of America (BAC) for its Food Support Connections program which will work to help end chronic hunger by reaching out to the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, who are eligible for the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), but who have not enrolled. SNAP provides nutrition assistance to low-income individuals and families, and is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net. This one year grant will allow 600 meals to be provided to 7,000 households, for a total of 4.2 million meals. Populations that will be the focal point include the working poor, Latinos and seniors.
"For the past eleven years, through outreach, education and assistance; and with the help of community based organizations, UWNYC has worked diligently to decrease food insecurity and the prevalence of diet-related diseases in New York City. "Through our hunger programs, we have been able to help more than 180,000 individuals receive benefits, and this grant will further ensure that those in high need communities are aware and have the ability to be proactive in obtaining the resources that are available to them.
