Students, Faculty Can Charge Devices for Free at Solar-Powered Charging Stations

ARLINGTON, Texas April 20, 2016The University of Texas at Arlington has joined forces with Reliant, an NRG Company, to provide students and faculty with the latest in mobile charging technology – two NRG Street Charge® solar charging stations. The 12.5-foot towers, donated by Reliant, are located near the UTA Library mall and near the campus bus stop outside the College of Business, respectively.

The stations are equipped with solar panels and a collection of mobile device charging cables so users can plug in for a free charge during study breaks and between lectures. The donation supports UTA’s commitment to provide the latest resources to support students and faculty and aligns with Reliant’s mission to power people’s lives on the go.

“UTA takes pride in being at the forefront of innovation, along with providing convenient and sustainable solutions on campus,” said John Hall, vice president for administration and campus operations. “With the Reliant-donated Street Charge stations, our students and faculty will benefit from abundant solar energy in an environment that encourages adoption of cutting-edge technology.”

UTA is the second-largest institution in The University of Texas System with more than 52,000 students, making it a hub for scholars in North Texas. The NRG Street Charge stations donated by Reliant is aligned with the University’s commitment to shaping sustainable urban communities through its Strategic Plan 2020: Bold Solutions | Global Impact.

As so many facets of college life continue to move toward the digital world, students and staff have a growing need for access to their mobile devices, without having to worry about whether they have enough power to get through the day.

“Reliant is committed to powering Texans at home, work and on the go, and the NRG Street Charge stations give students and faculty an easy and free way to recharge their mobile devices on campus,” said Elizabeth Killinger, president of NRG Retail and Reliant. “We are thrilled to donate these Street Charge stations to The University of Texas at Arlington and further the reach of smart, sustainable energy resources.”

The award-winning charging stations use three solar panels to turn the sun’s energy into free power for up to six devices, including iPhones and Android-model phones, simultaneously – powering them up as fast as a traditional wall outlet would. The outdoor stations won’t let dark skies or a few clouds damper the charge either, as an internal battery stores energy during the day to continue keeping devices energized at night and when the sun is not shining.
