Reduction in carbon footprint of 38 percent

Through development projects for energy savings, effective optimization of operations and a positive trend in district heating emissions, Wallenstam’s carbon footprint has decreased by 38 percent per square meter since 2013. This is equivalent to the emissions from more than 35,900 car journeys between Stockholm and Gothenburg and it exceeds our goal by a good margin, which is a decrease of 15 percent per square meter through 2018.

“The savings we have achieved are fantastic − they are a result of our completed energy saving projects, which have delivered a reduction in energy use of 20-40 percent in each property. Meanwhile, our district heating mix has developed positively and our aggressive rate of new construction has contributed to a younger property portfolio with a better operation of properties and energy optimization,” says Bo Strandberg, Environmental Manager at Wallenstam.

Today Wallenstam is self-sufficient in renewable energy through wind power and its subsidiary Svensk NaturEnergi. New alternative and economic methods and possibilities are continually evaluated such as solar cells and panels and battery storage.

Individual electricity and water metering has been standard in new construction projects since 2006. Such an installation contributes to a reduction in consumption by tenants of 10–25 percent following a running-in period.

“We have exceeded our target but our efforts are continuing by constantly improving technical installations, replacing fossil fuels with more environmentally friendly technology and by developing energy-efficient properties when we renovate or build new ones,” says Strandberg.
