Wihlborgs continues to reduce its climate impact

As a result of systematic efforts, Wihlborgs once again reduced its environmental impact during the year. CO2emissions per square metre declined 35 percent in 2016 — from 5.4 kg/m2to 3.5 kg/m2— down 75 percent since 2005.

Wihlborgs’ property portfolio has grown significantly since the company took its current form in 2005 — from 1 million to 1.8 million square metres. Despite this growth, the total amount of CO2 emissions has declined — from 14,000 tonnes in 2005 to 6,100 tonnes in 2016.

“This reduction in CO2 emissions was the result of long-term, systematic efforts. The decrease in 2016 was mainly due to the transition to renewable district heating at our properties in Malmö. Our properties already exclusively use renewable electricity from wind and hydropower,” says Staffan Fredlund, Environmental Manager at Wihlborgs.

“We also switched to using 100 percent biogas in our service vehicles during the year, and began work on converting the buildings heated by fossil gas to biogas or district heating. In addition, we continuously implement energy efficiency-enhancements at our properties,” continues Staffan Fredlund.

Wihlborgs’ environmental vision for the period up to 2020 is to continue to expand, while reducing our environmental impact. Along with a continued reduction of our CO2 emissions, we are increasing the number of environmentally certified buildings, focusing on sustainable material selection in our construction projects and making green leases the standard for new customers.

“Biodiversity is also important. For example, our properties in Malmö, Lund and Helsingborg are home to 12 beehives and about 50 nesting boxes and insect hotels. We are also involved in a dialogue with our landscapers regarding the choice of plants and how we can show greater environmental consideration in green spaces. In order to share our knowledge and inspire others, we are taking part in the Climate Challenge Conference, which will be held at our environmentally certified Ideon Gateway property in Lund on 27 March,” concludes Staffan Fredlund.
