WYG help improve fire services in Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is now the proud occupier of four brand new community fire stations thanks to the recently completed PFI project that benefitted from the full range of WYG’s multidisciplinary services.
The new buildings will enhance the existing fire and rescue service provision in the Gloucestershire area and greatly improve emergency response times due to the location of the sites.
Working in a consortium led by Kier Construction, award winning consultancy WYG provided the core roles of civil and structural as well as mechanical and electrical engineering. WYG was also responsible for geo-environmental reporting, flood risk assessments, highway engineering, road safety audits, renewable technology applications and engineering, energy audits, life cycle costings, CDM coordination, acoustic advice, fire engineering assessments, thermal modelling and full BREEAM advisory services.
The finished stations, recognised by the Fire Service as being truly exceptional buildings, offer robust and flexible accommodation for both the fire service and local community long into the future. Sustainability is a key driver in the design and many features are incorporated into the designs such as green roofs, rainwater harvesting, solar thermal panels and extensive use of variable refrigerant flow heat pumps to provide domestic hot water and heating/ cooling. All of these exceeded the Fire Services’ Agenda 21 commitment requirements.

The four new fire stations offer the following benefits:
- Greatly improved accommodation with community facilities integrated into the schemes
- Sustainable buildings (Two of the sites achieved BREEAM Excellent)
- Improved emergency response times
- Better training facilities for the Fire Service
- Skill Zone at Gloucester South is a state-of-the-art-facility which will attract wide spread usage and help educate younger generation life skills.
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is extremely pleased with the final buildings which exceed their expectation with the project architect intending to submit an entry for a ‘Cheltenham Civic Society Award’.
Cllr Will Windsor-Clive, Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member for communities, said: “The new fire stations look great and, situated as they are at vital locations throughout the county, provide better protection for the whole of Gloucestershire. These state-of-the-art facilities simply enable our committed fire fighters to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.”
